Speech Therapy
Communication is a vital part of everyone's life. Together, our speech and language abilities help us to define and express who we are. Speech therapy services focus on enhancing or restoring limited or lost communicative skills or swallowing capabilities lost due to injury, disease, aging or congenital abnormality.
Communication Disorders A communication disorder is an impairment of the ability to express oneself or understand others. People of all ages may have a communication disorder; however, young children and the elderly are at a higher risk. Communication disorders may result from:
- Stroke
- Dementia
- Head Injury
- Neurological Disease (Parkinson's Disease, Multiple Sclerosis)
- Head and neck cancer, head and neck surgery
- Tracheostomy
- Cleft palate, other craniofacial anomalies
- Premature birth and developmental delays
- Any disease or injury directly affecting the speech mechanism

- Communication & Language Treatment
- Swallowing/Dysphagia Assessment & Treatment
- Videofluoroscopic Swallow Study
Patients are evaluated and a treatment plan focusing on the patient's communications needs and strengths is established. Therapy is designed to enhance the patient's communication success and safety in activities of daily living. Family members and friends are encouraged to participate in the therapy process to maximize improvement and increase carry-over outside the clinic setting.
To schedule and evaluation:
A prescription for a speech-language evaluation and treatment must be provided by your doctor. The patient, family, or doctor's office staff may call the Speech-Language Pathology Department, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., 798-8015, for an appointment.
